Does my SFCR licence need to cover every food commodity I import?

Yes. Your SFC licence must accurately reflect every food commodity you import into Canada. The licence is not a general permission to import food. It is a specific authorization tied to the exact commodities and activities you are conducting. If you expand your product range into a new commodity category without first amending your licence to include it, your import declaration will be rejected automatically at the border. 

There is an important distinction that most importers do not know going in. You can hold different licences for different activities under the SFCR. An import licence, a processing licence, a storage licence, and an export licence are separate activity types. Holding an import licence does not authorize you to export food from Canada, or to process or repackage imported food domestically. If your business operates across multiple points in the supply chain or moves product in both directions across Canadian borders, your licence structure needs to reflect each activity separately. 

This matters particularly for Caribbean and international food brands that may be both importing their products into Canada and sourcing Canadian products for export back to their home market. Those are two distinct licence types and two distinct compliance obligations. 

Licence amendments are processed in the order received and are subject to the same service standard timelines as new applications. Do not wait until a shipment is in transit to discover your commodity list is incomplete.
